Ask Dr. Karen - June 22
Dr. Karen,
How can I stop being so reactive to colleagues’ comments and behaviors?
(Many requests for variations on this theme)
Answer:
Reactions occur first in our bodies. We
first have to attend to our physical state which has a major impact on
our body tension. Here are the basics to get in shape to stay
non-reactive:
·
Get enough rest; most of
us are typically sleep deprived especially when:
o
When there are deadlines
or month-end recurring get enough sleep
o
Keep alcohol consumption
down
·
Eat protein at every meal
and snack where possible
o
Sugary snacks are
no-no’s; you get a high and then a let down
o
Nuts, yogurt, cheese and
high-protein bars don’t give you spikes in blood sugar
·
Drink 6-8 glasses of
water a day; tea and coffee don’t count
·
Control the caffeine in
coffee and tea;
o
Use green tea or herbal
teas
o
Eat some protein and fat
with caffeine to lessen the sugar “hit” on your system
·
Cut out carbonated colas
and soda pop;
o
The high caffeine
content, sugar, or fake sugar, are not healthy for you.
o
The Phosphoric Acid in
sodas can deplete your bone mass causing osteoporosis
o
The over carbonation can
make you “over carbonated” at work.
·
Keep your muscles relaxed
o
Work out or stretch
regularly
o
Lean back in your chair
during meetings
o
If you find yourself
reacting strongly get up and walk around for ten minutes; that’s enough
time to calm down
